Baseball Splits with Shepherd University

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV--The Bloomsburg University baseball team got a split of its doubleheader with Shepherd University on Tuesday by downing the Rams, 16-2, in game two of the twinbill. The Rams took the opener by a score of 9-7.

Game two turned into a slugfest for the Huskies as all but two members of the starting lineup banged out two hits each. The Huskies took a 1-0 first inning lead on a RBI hit by Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/Monsignor Bonner). After the Rams tied the score in the bottom of the first, Bloomsburg put three on the board in the third inning with Vinnie James (Bristol/Bristol), Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown) and Rich Letts (Parkesburg/Octorara) driving in one run each. After Shepherd cut the deficit to 4-2 wit a run in the home half of the third inning, the Huskies extended their lead to 8-2 with four runs in the fifth. James had a solo homer in the inning, while Zach Silver (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) and Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) each stole home.

Later, leading 9-2, the Huskies put the game out of reach with seven runs in the seventh inning. Silver and Donofry each drove in two runs in the inning.

Chris Tressler (Lewistown/Lewistown) went 3-4 in the game with three runs scored, while Bucher and Silver each drove in three runs. Michael Griggs (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) picked up the win going the first four innings.

In the opener, Shepherd jumped out to a 9-1 lead only to see the Huskies rally back. The Huskies scored four times in the sixth inning with James and Bucher getting RBI doubles in the inning, while Ward drove in a run with a ground out with the fourth run coming on a steal of home by Bucher.

The Huskies got two more in the seventh to make it 9-7 game and had the tying run at the plate, but could not score.

Matt Allen (DuBoistown/South Williamsport) went 3-4 with two runs scored while James and Ward each drove in two runs.

Bloomsburg, 10-19, will host Mansfield on Friday at 1 p.m.
